2014 annual kids fishing derby
MITCHELL, SD - On Saturday, June 7th, Pheasant Country Pheasants Forever Chapter #872 hosted their annual kids fishing derby at the Cabela’s store in Mitchell.
The event kicked off at 9 a.m. with over 175 youth anglers casting a line in hopes of the top prize on the 3-acre pond just east of the retail store.
“We could not have been more excited about this year’s turnout. It was great to see so many first-time young anglers come out as well as those veteran kids who haven’t missed a derby yet,” said Jen Johnston, Youth Coordinator.
FREE Ringneck memberships were given to the first 50 families to register and all attendees received free hot dogs, Pepsi and a blaze orange cap. “Our chapter enjoys hosting this event that is a little outside of our norm. We have several youth hunting events throughout the year and one fishing event that just so happens to draw one of the biggest crowds,” Johnston said.
For each fish caught the child received a ticket from a Pheasants Forever volunteer and were then eligible for one of over $500 in prizes. The awards ceremony was held around 11:15 a.m. upon completion of the two hour derby. Over 32 kids in both the 6 & under and the 7 & up division went home with prizes.
