2014 pollinator class
Mitchell, SD – Pheasant Country Pheasants Forever teamed up with Mitchell Christian School on Thursday May 8th to teach kids the importance of pollinators and habitat not only for our wildlife but also for our ecosystem. The students were broken up into three groups and spent time at stations that included plant identification, a honey bee nesting activity and creating pollinator balls. Each student was able to take home a pollinator ball and received a free PF t-shirt from the local chapter.
“The pollinator ball was the favorite activity,” said Mike Blaalid, Youth Coordinator. “The kids learned the seed mix we used is beneficial to bees and provides great brood habitats for pheasants.”
The event was originally planned to have students outside and plant native flowers and forbes at the Bluestem Game Production Area, which is south of Mitchell. But it was moved to the school because of inclement weather. Chapter volunteers seeded the designated area which will be used as an outdoor classroom.
