2014 Youth Hunt - record turnout

The Mitchell Pheasant Country Pheasant's Forever chapter #872 held a youth hunt on Sunday October 5th, 2014. The hunt ran in conjunction with opening youth resident pheasant weekend and was hosted by the Rooster Roost Ranch of Mitchell. This year 39 youth hunters and their parents attended, which is up over 60% in participation over previous years.

The annual event that is open to all resident youth, age 12 through 17, who have a hunter safety certificate and small game license.

"The youth start the day with a 45 minute safety lesson, followed by a few trap practice rounds," said John Bennett, chapter youth coordinator. "We enjoy giving these kids hands-on experience, while teaching them responsibility, and showing them our passion for hunting and the outdoors," Bennett said.

Pheasant country members along with several guides from the Rooster Roost Ranch assisted with the afternoon hunt. Community sponsors, Cabela's, Quizno's, County Fair Food Store, Coke and the Pizza Ranch also donated lunches and ammunition for the day's event.  "We were trilled with this year's amazing turnout and will shoot for 50 youth next year, possibly breaking it up into two days," said Jen Johnston, Chapter youth coordinator. "We are very thankful for our host, committee volunteers and sponsors, we couldn't do it without them."

The chapter will host their 2015 event during youth opening weekend, which is normally scheduled for the first weekend in October.
